The Village Improvement Association, a nonprofit local charitable organization, has announced it will be accepting nominations for the third annual Village Improvement Association Citizenship Award. This award was inaugurated in 2009 during the VIA Centennial Celebration and honored Nancy Martin of Rehoboth Beach for her tireless work to keep local residents informed of government and community issues.

Priscilla Smith was the 2010 recipient of this award and was recognized because of the outstanding contribution to the community she has made during the past 15 years as president of the Friends of the Rehoboth Library Board of Directors, thereby continuing support for one of the

earliest VIA projects. With Rehoboth Beach Main Street she co-chairs the annual Chocolate Festival. Smith also dedicates time to All Saints' Church and serves as treasurer for the City of Rehoboth Beach.

The purpose of the award is to honor the VIA founding women who had the foresight to establish an organization of lasting value dedicated to improving life in the Rehoboth Beach area. The committee is chaired by past VIA President Faith Duncan, who said, "It is important to continue the tradition set forth by our founders and honor a woman who emulates their vision made more than a century ago."

The VIA Citizenship Award is open to all women of any age living within the Cape Henlopen School District and can include a professional and/or volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution of lasting value. The nominee also should personify the ideals established by VIA founders.

Members of the VIA Citizenship Award Committee will decide who among the nominees will be future recipients.

Nominations should be submitted to Duncan at culevine@verizon.net and must be received no later than Wednesday, June 15.

For more information, contact Duncan at 302-227-0887, cule-vine@verizon.net, or visit the Village Improvement Association website, www.rehoboth-beachvia.org.
