Owner honors mother's commitment to outreach, support and education

Hosting The Starboard's 21st Annual Golf Extravaganza to benefit the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition was an emotional experience for owner Steve "Monty" Montgomery.

"My mother fought breast cancer for 25 years before losing her life last year," Montgomery told the crowd of approximately 120 golfers and supporters at the start of the May 9 all-day event. "My mother had a deep appreciation for the services of the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalitna local group where all of the funds stay right here in the great state of Delaware, and told me last year she was happy that I was helping out."

"Today's tournament is a tribute to my mother and is being held in her honor," Montgomery concluded.

Priscilla Rakestraw is development director of the Delaware

Breast Cancer Coalition, whose mission is to raise awareness to facilitate early detection and treatment of breast cancer. "For Monty to follow in his mother's footsteps and to do this in her honor - there could be no greater tribute, and we are also honored," Rakestraw said.

Barbara Montgomery was an avid golfer greatly admired for her positive attitude, friendly outgoing personality, love of family, and commitment to save lives, empower people and help fund the search for cures for breast cancer.

Those who knew her wholeheartedly agree that her son's tribute could not have been more appropriate.

Fun for a great cause

With beautiful weather at the Salt Pond Golf Club location, local politicians, businesses and

friends joined forces to do what Starboard personalities do best -have fun for a great cause. Netting $3, 500 for the coalition, the event closed at The Starboard, where Montgomery announced tournament winners. Two foursomes tied for first place, leading to a beer pong-style tiebreaker.

John Glenn and Mark Willhote won first-place cups and the privilege of wearing the tournament's green jackets (similar to

the Masters) for themselves, Ty Mayers and Jay Caputo. Golf bags were awarded to second-place winners BJ Mitchell, Todd Sannons, Jamie Mault and Mike Johnson. Trophies were also presented to Shawn Coon for men's longest drive, Christina Harvey for women's longest drive, Vance Manlove for being the man to get closest to the pin, and to Kara Heissenbuttel for being the woman to get closest to the pin.
