Maynerd Makes Science Exciting
7th graders have been enjoying a guest in the life science classroom. It's a monarch caterpillar jokingly named Maynerd. Living in a specially designed growing cage, the caterpillar spent most of one day crawling around on a milkweed plant, eating 4 leaves, clinging upside down, not moving and attracting lots of student attention. Students started this year studying how scientists do their work. Maynerd helped students learn some difficult concepts about data collection. Two terms-- qualitative and quantitative--are hard for 7th graders to apply. With Maynerd's activities, learning was made much easier. Students had to decide, is he doing something we can count?
