An unknown middle-aged man managed to pass a counterfeit $ 1 bill Monday about 3:40 p.m. at the Allsup's Store at the corner of 6th Street and East Sumner Avenue.

The man, described as a white male, in his 40s or 50s with gray hair and glasses, attempted to pass other fake bills mixed with real bills while paying for items purchased at the store.

According to De Baca County Sheriff's Department report, store clerk Mayra Mendoza noticed that some of the bills look funny and she refused to accept some of them. After the man left the store, she tested the bills and found she had accepted a single counterfeit $ 1 bills.

Mendoza told law enforcement officials several other bills of different denominations in the man's wallet had appeared to be fake. She said the subject left in a small, green single cab pickup. Area agencies were contacted and the description of the man was distributed, but he has not been located, said Sheriff Dennis Cleaver.

The counterfeit bill is believed to have been made on a home printer on regular copy paper, Cleaver said. The bill was crunched up and wrinkled to make it appear to be worn and have more fiber content.
