Vixens hold off Grady

Vixen Classic next week

GRADY - The Fort Sumner Vixens held off a scrappy Grady Lady Broncho squad to improve to 2-0 here Tuesday at the GHS Gym.

The 26-24, 25-14, 25-21 victory sent the Vixens into a nine-day layoff. FSHS returns to the court Sept. 10 as the host the 8th annual Vixen Classic.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Stinnett had 19 kills, 14 digs and three aces for the Vixens, while middles Masy Miller and Candy Jo Webb each added seven kills, two aces and a block. Miller also had seven digs on the night.

Senior setter Justyne McMath contributed 34 assists and five digs to the Vixens' total, while senior Katelyn Gunn had five kills, six digs and an ace.

The Vixens also got seven digs from senior Anna Chavez, while sophomore libero Britney Williamson had two aces and five digs.'

Grady (1-3) was led, by Mandy Rush, who had six kills and five assists; and Mandy Rush, who added three kills and three aces. Grady also got seven assists and an ace from Kaitlin Glover and five kills and three aces from Skylar Starbuck.

The Vixens overcame an 19-16 deficit in the first game after leading early on.

Grady managed to fight off one game point and tied it at 24-24, but the Vixens got a back-row kill from Stinnett and an ace from Miller to close out the first game.

The Vixens took control midway into the second game and pulled steadily away to the 25-14 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Vixens built an 18-12 lead in the third game, but Grady fought its way back and tied it at 20-20.

But a Stinnett kill off the Grady block gave the Vixens the lead 21-20. Katelyn Gunn's kill and Stinnett's ace ended the game 25-21 and clinched the match.

Vixen Classic

The Vixens are the defending champions in the Vixen Classic after a four-game win over Jal in last year's finals.

Jal is not returning for 2009, but the Vixens will be grouped in pool play with Clayton, Melrose and Logan. The second pool includes Clovis JV, Eunice, Santa Rosa and Loving.

Pool play begins at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 in both the main gym and the new auxiliary gym in the Special Use Facility.

Based on pool play records, the eight teams will be seeded for bracket play, which begins at 5 p.m. Thursday.

After all teams play their first round match in the bracket, the tournament will take Friday, Sept. 11 off. They will return for the final two rounds of bracket play on Saturday, Sept. 12, beginning at 10 a.m.

The tournament bracket will be printed in next week's De Baca County News.

JV Vixens

The JV Vixens fell to 0-2 in a 15-25, 23-25 loss at Grady Tuesday.

The JV Vixens return to action Thursday, Sept. 17 when they host Logan. Three matches are scheduled (junior high, JV and varsity), beginning at 4 p.m.

Little Vixens

The Little Vixens opened their season with a three-game win at Grady Tuesday (Sept.1).

The Little Vixens took a 25-17, 20-25, 15-12, victory.

They are back in action Thursday, Sept. 17 when they host Logan. Three matches are scheduled (junior high, JV and varsity), beginning at 4 p.m.
