Arnold Arnie Rohm

Arnold "Arnie" Rohm, 91, of Decorah, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, following a sudden illness. Funeral services were 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Decorah Lutheran Church, with Rev. Tom Pietz, Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Gene Hermeier officiating. Organist was Kathy Murray. Soloist was Dr. David Judisch. The Luren sang "Beautiful Savior," "We Shall Walk Thru the Valley" and "Den Store Hvide Flok." Congregational hymns were "A Mighty Fortress," "Abide with Me" and "O God, Our Help in Ages Past." Honorary casketbearers were Dean and LaRue Hagen, Stanley and Elaine Fuchs, Don and Barb Berg and Paul and Lois Estrem. Casketbearers were Bill Whalen, Bob Whalen, Brian Whalen, Paul Rosendahl, Becky Halverson and Kathy Marschinke. Interment was at Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah. Arrangements were by Schluter - Ba-lik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Arnold Melvin Rohm was born Aug. 26, 1918, the son of Ole H. and Thorbjorg (Skaftedal) Rohm in Decorah, along with his twin sister Anna. Arnie was confirmed in 1932 at the Decorah Lutheran Church and graduated from Decorah High School in 1936. After graduation, he worked at Piggy Wiggly and Grangaard's groceries until September 1942, when he entered the US Army. He served during World War II for 38 months. After his discharge he was married to Dolores Brooks on Dec. 9, 1945, in Decorah. Arnie worked at Bolson's Poultry Farm and then farmed for about 15 years. He owned and operated the Hobby Shop about 10 years. Arnie worked for Coast to Coast and then at Luther College in the book store and in maintenance for 14 years. He retired from Luther College and then worked part time in the gift shop at the Vesterheim Museum and for several years. Arnie was a member of the Stamp Club, Coin Club, and the Master Gardeners Club. Arnie was also very interested in genealogy, rosemaling, bird watching, and flowers; especially his African violets and orchids. He also was a member of the Luren Singers, making two trips to Norway. Arnie was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church, serving on the church council, the Board of Deacons and taught Sunday school in his early years.

Arnie's survivors include his twin sister, Anna Iverson, Decorah; one brother, Marvin (Ruth) Rohm, Cedar Falls; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Brooks, Decorah and Marie Rohm, Decorah, along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

Arnie was preceded in death by his parents, Ole H. and Thorbjorg (Skaftedal) Rohm; his wife, Dolores Rohm, Jan. 5, 2008; three sisters: Martha Rosendahl, Mabel Eittreim and Esther Barrett; one brother, Erling Rohm; five brothers-in-law: Leonard Iverson, Charles Rosendahl, William "Bill" Brooks, Delmar Brooks and Ralph Nelson.
