DHS Director of Bands James Fritz elected to board of Iowa High School Music Association

James L. Fritz, Decorah High School Director of Bands, was recently elected to serve as the In-resentative on the Executive Board of the Iowa High School Music Association.

This board is made up of six members: three Iowa school superintendents, one Iowa school board member, one Iowa vocal representative and one Iowa instrumental representative. The position is a for a 5-year term.

As the Instrumental Representative on this board, Fritz is representing all of the Iowa High School band and orchestra programs in the state of Iowa.

The mission of the IHSMA is to foster music education in Iowa, to organize and regulate state-wide music festivals, to establish standards for music performances, to develop programs that recognize outstanding musicians and performances and to provide lifelong musical opportunities and appreciation for all Iowa high school music students.

Some of the activities sponsored by IHSMA include: state marching band festival, all-state music festival, state jazz festivals, solo and ensemble festival, large group festival and piano festival.

Fritz is in his 24th year as director of bands at Decorah High School. He is past president of the Iowa Bandmasters Association and is a National Board Certified Teacher in Instrumental Music. Decorah bands under Fritz's direction have received 40 Division I ratings in both marching and con-cert band.

There have been 77 band members chosen for the All-State Music Festival during this same time. He is also a frequent adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor.

His wife, Elizabeth, is the current president of the Iowa Bandmasters as well as being a National Board Certified Teacher of Instrumental Music.

Decorah bands under Fritz's direction have received 40 Division I ratings in both marching and concert band.
