Holiday traditions are so sweet

Welcoming the holiday spirit, Rita Mehlhorn held her 8th annual bake-off, Dec. 13. The bake-off, which Mehlhorn began with a few friends in 2001, became a tradition with an early morning breakfast followed by sharing holiday cookie and candy recipes and baking until the countertops were covered with delectable treats.

"We look forward to the first couple weeks of December, and that new cookie or candy recipe," Mehlhorn said.

This year, nine ladies arrived bright and early with recipes, mixers, bowls, ingredients, and aprons in hand. Following a breakfast of German apple torte, meats, fruits and cheeses, the ladies got their oven mitts ready to prepare spumoni chunk cookies, date nut balls, bright-eyed susahs, cookie dough delights, chocolate pecan pie bars, Martha Washington bonbons, Oreo candy, strawberries candy, and peanut butter cream cheese brownie bites. Each lady bakes enough for everyone to take home a dozen, and give as Christmas gifts--or not. Up to 200 dozen cookies are baked, more than enough to fill Santa's goody bag and keep the tradition going strong for years to come.
