A special committee of the DeWitt City Council voted Tuesday to recommend McClelland Consulting Engineers of Little Rock for the city's street repair project.

In addition to McClelland, two other companies, Miller-Newell of Newton and USI of Springdale, submitted statements of qualifications for the work. These were not formal bids; Mayor Aubrey McGhee said money wouldn 't be discussed until after the council approves the choice of McClelland.

Alderman Pat McKewen said McClelland was his first choice since it had the most experience doing the type of work that will be required in DeWitt. McKewen had worked with McClelland when he served on the airport commission and "I know they're familiar with what's here," such as soil and drainage conditions.

In 2003, McClelland actually made a study of the streets in De-Witt. Unfortunately, the original report was lost, but "they still have the familiarity with the town," McKewen said. A McClelland engineer, Mitch Rose, also came to DeWitt to answer questions at the public forums that were held last year during the campaign for the city sales tax.

The choice of McClelland must now be approved by the full City Council.
