Hutchison carries Wharton, Perry carries the entire state

In a close vote in Wharton County, U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison outlasted local resident Debra Medina by a 1,977 to 1,772 margin for the Republican Party's gubernatorial nomination.

Gov. Rick Perry finished a distant third with 1,772 votes.

In the U.S. Representative race, Ron Paul remained popular, gaining 3,970 votes, 84.88 percent. His nearest challenger was Tim Graney with 357 votes, 7.63 percent.

In the Democratic Primary, Bill White dominated with 1,014 votes, 87.26 percent while his nearest competitor was Farouk Shami, 81, 6.97 percent. In the U.S. Representative race, Winston Cochran finished with 447 votes, 47.25 percent, to 271 for Robert Pruett, 28.65 percent and 228 for Jeff Cherry, 24.10 percent.

The Wharton County results varied greatly from the rest of the state based on unofficial numbers posted on the Texas Secretary of State's Web site.

The one local race that trended along the same lines as the state was the Republican Primary for U.S. Representative with Paul receiving 45,947 district wide, 80.76 percent. Graney was a distant second with 5,536 votes, 9.73 percent.

In the race for the Republican nomination for Governor, Perry won the majority he needed across the state with 754,611 votes, 51.11 percent. Hutchison finished with 447,905 votes, 30.33 percent while Medina garnered 273,895 votes, 18.5 percent.

In the U.S Representive Democratic Primary, there will be a runoff between Pruett, 6,836, 41.59 percent; and Cochran, 5,107, 31.07 percent. Cherry finished with 4,493 votes, 27.33 percent.

White was the overwhelming winner for the Democratic Governor nomination with 515,318 votes for 76.1 percent. The only other Democrat to reach a double digit percentage was Farouk Shami, who received 86,336 votes, 12.75 percent
