THE BUS STOPS HERE

We gave our son Seth a Golden Retriever puppy for Christmas in 2008. He'd always wanted one and I decided since he was about to leave for college a puppy might be a little insurance for me at home. I figured if he didn't want to come home to see me, he might at least come home to see his dog.

That plan really didn't work out too well for me. And now the poor thing, who is still really a puppy herself, had a litter of eight puppies. Yes eight. And they are all black. Not that

I have anything against black dogs, but couldn't at least one or two had the pretty golden red coloring of their momma?

I know, I remember enough from my health and science classes that black is always the predominant gene.

So the first few weeks weren't too bad.

We had a nice little spot in Seth's closet where we set up the nursery, or the "Puppy Palace" as our youngest named it.

I would have preferred the garage but the kids all insisted it was too cold in the garage.

That is until I came home after being gone for a few days. I walked into my house and the smell sent me right back outside.

I quickly cleaned out a spot in the garage and moved those darling two-week-old puppies to their new home. And fumigated the house.

The garage was a good home. For a few weeks. Until they really started having serious business - if you know what I mean.

As long as the garage door was closed and you didn't have to go in the garage for anything, it was all good.

But if you had to venture into the garage, there were a couple of options.

First, hold your breath, hit the garage door opener, clear the area for 10 minutes and let the place air out. Or second, put on a face mask, walk in, get what you need and get out. Either way you had to watch your step. This weekend they turned four weeks old and momma has decided it's time for these babies to go.

She won't even lie down so the puppies can nurse. They grab hold as she's walking by and get in a few drinks.

So we started feeding them milk softened puppy food and we moved them to a spot in the yard.

The only problem is they want come to the back door and try to get in every time someone opens the door.

So the new problem has become, watch your step when you go out the back door. You'll either step on a puppy or step in something a puppy left behind.

Easter is fast approaching. Why not think outside the box, or basket, this year?

What child wouldn't love to have an adorable, playful puppy in his or her Easter basket?
