In the battle of the ballot to represent the Democrats in Precinct 2, Clarence Owens Jr. established an early lead that carried on through Tuesday's Election Day voting.

Overall, Owens grabbed 240, of the 322 ballots cast in his party's run-off in Precinct 3, 74.53 percent. His opponent, Billy "Bubba" Broesche finished With 82 votes, 25.47 percent of the vote.

"I didn't think that I would win by that big of a margin," Owens said. "I figured it would be closer than that but I think I campaigned more than he did. I got out there and knocked on doors and had more signs up than he did."

The only precinct with two polling places for Tuesday's voting, early voting has Broesche with an 11-2 lead in Box 201, which was located in East Bernard. In Boxes 202 and 203, located at St. James Baptist Church in Wharton, Owens grabbed the overall early lead with 129 votes to 20 for Broesche. No immediate breakdown was available for Election Day voting for the individual locations.

Owens will now face incumbent Precinct 2 Commissioner and Repubbcan nominee Chris King in November.

"The margin of victory tells me that I have a good chance in November if I can get even more of my supporters to come out. If I can do that, 111 have a good chance to win in November. The big challenge for both of us will be getting people to the polls to vote for us."

In the U.S. Representative, District 14 race, Winston Cochran received 252 of the 366 votes, 68.85 percent, to 114 votes for Robert Pruett, 31.15 percent. Cochran advances to face incumbent U.S. Representative Ron Paul in November.

Tuesday's Run-off Election results are still unofficial and remain so until the local political parties canvass the votes later this month. No date on when the canvassing would be held was available at press time.
