Brahma Track teams late surge brings home Regional Crown

A late surge in the final two events of the 2010 Region IV-2A Track meet pushed the East Bernard Brahmas past District 26-2A Rival Altair Rice for this year's Regional Team Title.

The meet was held on Monday and Tuesday at Jud-son Stadium in Converse with field event finals both days, running preliminaries on Monday and the finals on Tuesday. With all 17 events scored, the Brahmas finished the meet with 84 points while Rice ended the meet with 64 points. Scoring in track gives 10 points for a first place finish, eight for second, six ifor third, four for fourth, two jfor fifth and one for sixth wjith those totals doubled in the relay events.

The Brahmas picked up 18 key points in the next to last event of the meet as Pat-rick Pitts and Nick Guerra finished one-two in the 1,600-m run. Pitts ran a time! of 4:27.26 while Guerra finished in 4:28.32. That reversed their finish in the 3,200-m finals, run Monday, with Guerra taking the gold with a time of 9:56.2 and Pitts running a 10:01.9, Thomas Garcia added a fifth place finish in the longest run of the regional with a time of 10:37.0. With the top two finishers in each event qualifying for the state meet, both Pitts and Guerra advance to Austin.

The Brahmas clinched their team with a third in the boys' 1600-m relay by finishing thii-d in a time of 3:27.32. The relay was made up of Zach Sprague, Shawn Goff, Jermaine Perkins and Ben Anderson.

In field event results, East Bernard got a big boost in the shot put as Adam Kubena won the event with a throw of 54.11.25. The Brahmas' Jermaine Perkins took third in the high jump as he cleared 6-02. Third place finishers serve as the region's alternates to the state meet. Ty Slanina added points for the team in the long jump as he finished fifth with a running leap of 21.05.

Also earning a trip to state on the track was Slanina, who took second in the 200-m dash in a time of 22.91. In other track results, Sprague took fourth in the 800-m run with a time of 1:59.72 while Miles Locke made the finals and finished in the 8 spot with a time of 2:10.74.

One head-to-head match where Rice had the advantage on East Bernard was the 800-m relay won by the Raiders in a time of 1:30.57. The Brahma team of Goff, Perkins, Ben Anderson and Slanina reached the finals but finished seventh in a time of 1:32.94.
