Our prayers are getting answered.

Last Thursday brought the return to Wharton County of a commodity that has been sorely lacking all spring long: Rain.

About 1:30 p.m. May 12 is when a line of occasionally severe thunderstorms blew into central Wharton County.

A hot, gray day turned to a cool, misty mess welcomed by farmers, ranchers and anyone else who had missed the pitter-patter of raindrops falling on your head, on pastures, on fields of cotton and milo, on wildfiowers and backyard gardens and so on.

As of 2:15 p.m. Thursday, East Bernard had received 0.46 of an inch of rain, with Wharton at a quarter-inch and Glen Flora at 0.65.

No storm damage was reported to law enforcement agencies around the county, according to the Wharton County Office of Emergency Management.

The long-term weather pattern shows a merciful relenting of La Nina, the force responsible for these dry, dusty weeks in Southeast Texas.

La Nina, a cooling of the western Pacific waters, has the power to affect weather worldwide; this spring, it helped lead to the floods and tornado outbreaks in the South and the country's midsection, and the extreme to exceptional drought all across Texas.

One dose of rain will not erase the deficit this area has seen in recent months, but it could well get things going in the right direction again. Meanwhile, the burn ban enacted by the Wharton County commissioners remains in place until further notice.

The short-term forecast shows highs in the upper 80s and low 90s, lows in the low to mid-70s, few clouds and no rain.

Guess we'll just have to keep praying.
