For the first time in four years, the yearbook staff recently won first place and a Bronze Star and a first place from UIL on April 10 at ILPC in Austin.

The last book to win a Star was the 2007 book.

The 2011 staff also won 12 Individual Achievement Awards and 9 photo awards for the yearbook.

The Brahma was one of 33 yearbooks statewide to be recognized with a Star award. This places the yearbook in the top 10 percent of yearbooks statewide.

"We look for superior design, photography, writing and coverage," UIL Director of Journalism Jeanne Acton said in a letter to the finalists. "Each year, the quality of the yearbooks improves.

"The judging panel had a difficult time selecting the 33 Stars due to that high qualiy."

This year's 2011 staff also won five IAAs for the current book under production.

First Place Again

Continuing a four-year tradition, the high school newspaper, the Brahma Beat, was nominated for a Star and hoped to receive the 5th one.

Even though that didn't happen, the newspaper did receive a first-place Award of Distinguished Merit and 19 Individual Achievement Awards and 6 photo awards at ILPC.

"Your newspaper meets all the criteria, and although not all newspapers nominated will receive a Star, to be nominated is an honor itself," Acton said in a congratulory letter sent to finalists.

Although they fell short in their goal to win a Star, publications adviser Brenda Stel-zel is still proud of this year's staff.

"I was disappointed the newspaper didn't win a Star," Stelzel said. "I believe this year the students have produced some of our best newspapers.

"However we were told over and over at the convention that the competition was extra tough this year, and the decision was hard, so I guess maybe that's why the newspaper didn't make it."
