Texas AgriLife Research scientist Cristine Morgan and researchers from other universities have developed a new technique for mapping and testing oil-contaminated soils.

The new technique provides a quick and inexpensive method for mapping the quantity of petroleum contaminants in soil without taking soil samples back to the laboratory for evaluation, according to researchers. Work continues to distinguish specific hydrocarbon signatures in soil.

Others involved in the research are David Weindorf of Louisiana State University and John Galbraith of Virginia Tech.

Results from the study are in the July-August 2010 issue of the Journal of Environmental Quality, a publication of the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America.

Results from the study indicated that VisNIR spectroscopy quantified the hydrocarbons in field-moist, natural soils better than dried ground soils because of volatility of the hydrocarbons during soil processing, according to the researchers.

Forty-six soil samples, including both contaminated and reference samples, were collected from six different parishes in Louisiana, according to the study.
