EMS levy appears to have passed

Mired in losing numbers for nearly a week after the primary election, an emergency medical services levy for South Pierce Fire and Rescue finally reached a winning percentage 6f votes in unofficial returns and apparently will pass. Of the approximately 3,800 ballots counted through last week, 60.1 percent were in favor of the fire district's measure. The minimum percentage of yes-votes required for passage is 60 percent. The tally first pushed past 60 percent on Aug. 23. Before then, it had been at 58 and 59 percent and slowly rising since initial tabulations after the Aug. 17 election. The final outcome is scheduled for today, when Pierce County election officials certify all of the primary's results. The numbers weren't finalized before today's print edition of the The Dispatch went to press, but they will be reported in the online edition (dispatchnews.com). Results will also be on the county election department's web site at www.piercecountywa.org/results

If it's approved, the levy would continue for another six years at its current property tax level of 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The revenue would pay for the salaries of personnel, medical supplies and equipment that district officials say is needed for adequate emergency medical services (EMS) in the district's service area - unincorporated areas of Eatonville, Roy, Harts Lake, Lacamas and McKenna.

The existing levy will expire at the end of this year.
