Washington's fall roundup of pesticides from large farms and commercial users will soon be underway. Last year it netted more than 60 tons of unwanted product. The state Department of Agriculture contracts with companies that take the chemicals to Utah or Arkansas, where they are incinerated in state-of-the-art facilities.

"Typically, we get herbicides, such as 2-4-D, Clopyrilid, Dynaseb; or insecticides, such as parathion, malathion at these events. Or even DDT, we still get in some of our collections," said Mike Louisell, of the Deptartment of Agriculture." The state supervises collection of the pesticides because it's also responsible for regulating them and licensing users.

The collections are only for commercial users. Businesses are asked to contact the Department to let them know what's coming. The toll-free Waste Pesticide Program number is 877-301-4555.

The Web site is http://agr.wa.gov - click on "Pesticides and Fertilizers."

Collections will be held in Linden on Sept. 9, Longview on Sept. 16, and Spokane on Sept. 24.
