Gary Redding, the Grand Saline High School Principal, has been working with Channel One Network all summer to install cables and a few televisions in science labs so that the student body can utilize the educational benefits of the network.

Channel One Network is a national television network catered to teenagers. The cast of the network are young people right out of high school who can relate to teenagers on their level. The network discusses current national news topics like the War in Iraq, the controversy over building a Mosque near Ground Zero, the huge egg recall due to Salmonella poisoning, and other current news that affects everyone in some way.

Channel One takes into consideration the fact that many teenagers do not keep up with the news--very few watch the news, and therefore, do not know what is going on outside their hometowns except for what they may hear in conversation. Understanding this trend, Channel One approaches the

reporting of national news in a way that makes it relevant to teenagers, in a language they can relate to, which, in turn, provides incredible "teaching moments" that can be discussed further in the classroom.

Teachers are able to access the database and review upcoming episodes so they can use the information in conjunction with lesson plans, incorporate into school activities, and. from which to devel-' op projects.

Besides current national news, Channel One also introduces topics related to high school students, like study skills, preparing for the SAT, extraordinary accomplishments or events occurring at other schools across the nation, etc. which students will find beneficial. The broadcast will be aired every day during the new "activity period" at the high school and middle school, which will last about 25 minutes each morning. Teachers who choose to participate will be able to take this opportunity each day to view the broadcast with their students. Additionally, since the broadcasts are prerecorded, teachers will also have the option to refer back to episodes at any time for teaching purposes.

The Grand Saline ISD is confident that Channel One will be a beneficial, rewarding addition to the secondary curriculum, both for the students and the faculty.
