"Wow" was the general response when the board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando met at the new Jack & Lee Rosen Southwest Orlando Jewish Community Campus for its August meeting. After a tour of the facilities by JCC Branch Director Bonnie Rayman, the board heard from Harris Rosen, community benefactor and leader, who shared his vision and commitment for the future. The campus is named for his parents. As one board member stated, "Having the campus--the way it looks and the way it feels--adds a reason to include this area if I were to move."

The D'Var Torah presented by Barbara Weinreich inspired the board directors to pursue justice throughout the world as they moved into the business portion of the meeting. Faced with current economic challenges, the board had deliberated for several months on the right balance between local needs and support for Israel and international Jewry. The board reached final decisions on allocations for the 2009-2010 year and agreed that any additional pledges to the recent 2009 campaign would be allocated locally unless designated by the donor for overseas.

To strengthen management of the Federation's financial resources, the board also approved the transition to a process for tying allocations payments to agencies and other organizations to the actual cash collected from donors. Previously, the amount pledged had been the basis for setting the payments. The Federation is now directing its efforts to the implementation of its 21st Century Giving Model, which focuses on donor-directed giving through giving circles, endowments, on-line philanthropic opportunities and traditional development components. In addition to several other items, the board ratified Lawrence (Larry) Katz, Regional Private Banking Manager for Wachovia Bank, A Wells Fargo company, to head the Finance Committee for the Federation. Katzand the Finance Committee were charged with proposing ways to strengthen the financial condition of the Maitland Campus and ensuring the long-term financial stability of the Federation.

Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando has been building community in Central Florida for more than 60 years. The Federation is dedicated to strengthening Jewish identity, energizing the relationship with Israel and meeting human needs locally and globally. The Federation is the gateway to the Jewish community of the Greater Orlando and around the world.
