ON CENTER

Center Street was actually rocking last Saturday. It was nice. Traffic was backed up in either direction almost all day long with folks slowing down, their windows open, breathing in the springtime and the carnival atmosphere that had overtaken quiet little downtown Kyle.

The first Market Days of the decade actually got a running start Friday night as the Fajita Fiesta fired up on the square and filled the evening air with smoke and music. At dawn on Saturday the park was already teeming with energy and by the time the sun hit the square, it was filled with vendors from all over the place, ready to ply their wares or give you the lowdown on their various causes. Although pedestrian traffic was pretty light until around lunchtime, by noon the place was rocking. There was live music all day long-from country, to kind of mellow, to a wild African-infused drumline that pulsed energy through the crowd and seemed to make everyone get that "don't worry, be happy" pep to their step. It was a blast.

Just got word that Ann Conlee, one of my all-time favorite people in town, was named Region XIII Assistant Principal of the Year by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association. Ann, the AP during both my kiddos' tenure at Kyle Elementary, stole my heart years ago with her unabashed loyalty to the education and wellbeing of the students in her charge as well as to the faculty and staff she oversees. She does it all with grace and a sense of humor to boot. Congrats, Ann. You deserve it.

And, I'm pretty sure that having internationally acclaimed authors visit your little town on a frequent basis is relatively uncommon, so we should count ourselves lucky that the kind folks over at the Katherine Anne Porter House, a couple of blocks west of the square, are keeping them coming. This Friday, writer Claudia Rankin will be beguiling us with her award-winning poetry. As always, the event is free, open to the public and begins at 7:30 p.m. See you there.
