Artwork by students at Barton Middle School, under the direction of Sherry France and Stephanie Townley, and Dahlstrom Middle School, under the direction of Carla Bandy will be displayed at the Hays CISD Performing Arts Center this month. In addition, artwork by Hays CISD students will be on exhibit at the Buda Fine Arts Festival October 3-4. the 16th Annual Las Cru-ces International Mariachi Conference at New Mexico State University this November. Under the direction of Adolph Ortiz, the students will receive instruction in mariachi music, stage performance skills, and ensemble techniques, as well as audition for the chance to play in the conference's Student Showcase Concert with the world-renowned Mariachi Cobre.

Ortiz says the local musicians still have about $10,000 to raise for transportation, meals, and accommodations. The group lost its summer fireworks fundraiser to drought conditions and in an attempt to raise the necessary funds, is offering to perform for community events.
