Amending our political coverage

Over the next four weeks this newspaper will intensify its election coverage that will culminate on Nov. 2. These biennial elections have been drawing Americans, at least a percentage of registered voters, to the polls for more than 220 years.

The Hays Free Press has reported on national, state and local elections since Thomas Fletcher Harwell founded this newspaper in 1903. That means early day Buda and Kyle readers learned from this newspaper that Teddy Roosevelt had won a second term as president, despite the fact that Hays Countians voted for Democrat Alton B. Parker by a sizeable majority.

In those days newspapers and the telegraph were the only reliable source of information about the election process; the results flowed throughout the countryside at a pace that seems leisurely by current standards.

Today, there are many avenues for the distribution of election news, but the printed page that you can clip and save for later referral is still an important part of the election process. So, we continue our local coverage.

We also understand that some readers prefer our quick website updates. We will include online coverage of elections, with continual updates through the night on Nov. 2.

Our Oct. 13 election edition will include our always quirky candidate questionnaires, as well as reports on debates sponsored by the League of Women Voters. In addition, we will include video coverage of the League debates in San Marcos on our website.

We will not be endorsing candidates running for county and local offices, though, as we realize that any voter with the slightest interest has multiple opportunities to meet candidates and question them. But multi-county and statewide candidates are not as easily accessible, so we will offer some observations on several of these positions in future weeks. Stay tuned.
