Meriwether County District 1 Commissioner Freddie Hines, just recently elected chairman of the board, will apparently not seek re-election this fall.

Hines did not qualify by the deadline.

Beth Neely (R-Warm Springs) will be the only candidate seeking a seat on the Meriwether County Commission who will not have opposition in her bid for re-election in District 5.

District 1 and District 3 will not be settled until the General Election in November, with both Democratic and Republican candidates qualifying for both posts.

Former commissioner Emmett Clark qualified to run against Gene King for Hines' District 1 seat.

In District 3 former Commission Chair Nancy Jones and a political newcomer Kendall King will be seeking the seat now held by Frank Keller.

"I'm extremely happy to know that I will be serving the people of District 5 for four more years," Neely said. "Now I won't have to concentrate on the rigors of running for office and utilize that time to concentrate on doing the things I need to do to help our county and it citizens.

"The first thing we have to address is the county's financial situation. We, as a collective group, are working together to utilize the resources available to us to make sure those economic issues are addressed.

"Once that is done, then we have to resume the challenge of working for continued industrial growth and the county-wide water and sewerage system, which is so important.

"I have really enjoyed working with the other commissioners since taking office and our County Administrator Rita Rainwater, who does an excellent job. I really look forward to having the opportunity of serving for another four years."
