Saturday provided a winter playground

Saturday's snowfall turned into an absolute delight for many residents of Horry County.

The fluffy stuff started falling in earnest just before I went to the Theatre of the Republic's hilarious production of Noises Off and by the time I got back outside two inches had already accumulated on my car. Some of the northern folks coming out of the theater must have laughed at us Southerners being so impressed by a little bit of snow.

I woke up early to find everything covered with a pristine blanket of white precipitation that transformed the bleakness of winter into a dazzling, sparkling vista.

Like many other people, I grabbed a camera and started snapping away. Some of our work can be seen in this week's Independent.

It was wonderful to enjoy the snowfall without worrying about slick highways. For the most part, the snow didn't stick to roads and highways in our part of the state.

The snow that fell here was kind of wet, which made it perfect for building snowmen and forming snowballs. It was interesting to see how creative folks became in this new medium. Best of all, most of the snow was gone by late Saturday, leaving behind only puddles and great memories.

I was sorry to see the Myrtle Beach marathon fall victim to the weather. The organizers put a tremendous amount of time and effort into making the marathon a premier event. It must have been frustrating to have the race called off on the eve of the start.

Frankly, I think the City of Myrtle Beach made the right call. Conditions would have been dangerous in the early morning hours and there was no assurance at the time the decision was made that conditions would clear up significantly later in the day.

It was just one of those unfortunate weather-related occurences that people must deal with when they plan outdoor activities. I do hope the marathon organizers will be able to offer some type of com pensation to the runners as a goodwill gesture. Perhaps a credit on next year's entry fee would be in order.

Saturday's snow certainly made a welcome diversion from the winter blues. It was the perfect snowstorm!

The Horry Independent extends its condolences to the family of Jennings Chestnut Sr. Jennings was a much loved and respected member of our community whose reputation as a mondolin-maker and put Conway on the bluegrass music map.

Chesnut died earlier this week after an illness. Friends and supporters are holding a bluegrass festival Sunday at Conway High School in his memory. If you get a chance, try to attend.
