Coley Snowden

Services for Coley Harp Snowden, 94, were held yesterday in Pine Grove Baptist Church, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel.

Mr. Snowden, eldest of 10 children of Roney Bell Johnston Snowden and Cullen Harp Snowden died Sunday in Mt. Pleasant.

He was born on June 24, 1915. Mr. Snowden was raised on a small farm in the-Pee-Dee community of Cedar Grove on the outskirts of Conway. He was employed as a welder at the Charleston Naval Shipyard during World War II and later returned to Horry County, purchasing a farm in the Pine Grove section of Cohway.

"Mr. Coley" operated a dairy, farmed tobacco and raised hogs, always seeking die best way to support his family. He loved to hunt and fish, especially with his children, his beloved brother Bates, nephews, Sam and George, and his uncle Hawley Johnston.

Mr. Snowden was married for 60 years to Wilma Love Davis who preceded him in death in 1998.

They were founding and faithful members of Pine Grove Baptist Church where he served many terms as deacon, trustee and treasurer, and Mrs. Snowden was pianist and devoted children's teacher.

Surviving are a son, John Coley and daughter-in-law Vicky Hennies Snowden of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Loula Marion and son-in-law Thomas Parke Cothran of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Richard Allen Cothran and his wife Kathy of Darlington, Dana Marion Cothran and her fiance, Daniel Haney of Canton, N.C., Coley Davis Snowden and his wife Nancy and Andrew Michael Snowden of Hanahan; great-granddaughters, Brittney Michelle and Jordan Grace Cothran of Darlington and Lucy Elizabeth and Hannah Love Snowden of Hanahan. He was thrilled when told Lucy and Hannah would welcome a brother or sister in March.

Mr. Snowden was also survived by five loving sisters, Robbie Farrell and Ann Schoen (Gayle E.) of Summerville and Mollie Jo Rhode (James G.), Naomi Henderson (Kester V."Bobby") and Shirley Bobo of Charleston.

Mr. Snowden was much loved "Uncle Coley" to his large extended family. He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret; and three brothers, Kibler, Linwood and Bates Snowden.

Surviving sisters-in-law are Mabel (Bates!) Snowden of Conway and Pearl (Linwood) Snowden of Moncks Corner.
