After serving 11 pails of ice cream for the Hutchinson County 4-H Appreciation Dinner Friday, Aug. 7, the Hutchinson County Farm Bureau Board of Directors met. The secretary and treasurer reports were approved as read.

Tim Mehlhaff reported that he and his wife Jane will attend the annual YF&R summer event Saturday, Aug. 8, in Pierre. Kathy Guth-miller reported that Dakota Fest is Aug. 18-20 with the threshers luncheon Aug. 19. Anyone willing to help with the luncheon will receive a day's pass. At this time, Wayne Bietz, Tim and Jane Mehlhaff and Doyle and Kathy Guth-miller will help with the luncheon. Tuesday, Aug. 18, District 1 is to supply helpers. Guthmillers will help Tuesday also.

Guthmiller reported that the Women in Ag Conference will be Friday, Sept. 25, at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge with pre-conference meal and mini workshops the night before. The keynote speaker is Linda Chamberlain talking about northern Alaskan women who have created their own financial independence through self-employment. For further information call 605-347-2436.

This year's SDFB Women's Leadership Team's book series project is about animals. The four books for the set are about how farmers and ranchers care about their animals, how milk comes from a cow, raising a calf and life on a pig farm. The only book available in hard cover is the pig farm. Pre-orders are being taken (deadline Oct. 1) so all books will be available for the counties at the SDFB annual meeting. Guthmiller will try to obtain a set to bring to the HCFB annual meeting Saturday, Sept. 12, so the members may see what the book projects are all about and why it is important to get these books out in public.

Anyone who is a part of Hutchinson County Farm Bureau, a producer member currently farming/ranching or having retired, should contact Guthmiller at 605-661-2170 so the county has an accurate record of voting delegates for the SDFB annual meeting. These results need to be tallied Thursday, Oct. 1.

Over 100 farm and ranch families will be honored Thursday, Sept. 3, at the S.D. State Fair for Century Farm Recognition Day.

The Hutchinson County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting and Banquet will be Saturday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. at the KC Hall in Parkston, speaker will be SDFB president Scot Vander Waal. Door prizes will be awarded.

Guthmiller attended the kitchen talks with the U.S. Congressional staffers in Corsica. Douglas County Farm Bureau hosted this informative meeting Thursday, July 23, with discussion on military spending, clean water act, the cap and trade bill, the energy bill and the upcoming health care bills.

There being no further business, the board adjourned to enjoy the rest of the 4-H Achievement Days' festivities. Some board members participated in the Farm Olympics.
