The Lady Raiders started the 30th annual Burney Jamboree with a convincing win over Big Valley Thursday but needed a victory over Portola to keep pace with Fall River in the round robin tournament.

The Burney girls overcame a 12-point halftime deficit and closed to within three points with just 25 seconds remaining in the game. But they would lose by that margin at 59-56.

The comeback effort may have taken a toll on the Lady Bulldogs as they ran out of gas Saturday against Fall River losing the game 53-47. Fall River went 3-0 in the tournament for the Jamboree title.

Jones was hoping for some late game heroics against the Lady Bulldogs after falling behind 30-17 in the first half. Burney (3-5) closed the gap by five in the third quarter but outscored 15-7 in the fourth to bring their tourney to an end.

"My girls were sucking air and not taking good shots at the end of the Fall River game," Jones said. "But they (Fall River) played really well, they hit their shots and they beat us."

Anastastia Martin-Borders was in foul trouble early but still led the team with 12 points followed by Hannah Rogers with 10.

The Fall River game was called tightly and both teams had to deal with players in foul trouble in the game.

Despite only getting one win at the home tourney, Burney coach Tara Jones said she liked the her team competed.

"That Portola game gave me a good idea where the team's head is and where their heart is at," Jones said. "They never gave up. They didn't get the win, but they almost pulled it out."

Burney was down by nine points to start the fourth and closed the gap to within five a couple times only to see Portola push their lead back to 10. Kayla Jones completed a four-point play after getting fouled while sinking a three form behind the arc making the score 54-57 with just 25-ticks on the clock.

The Lady Raiders went into foul mode and Portola went 2-of-4 from the line and Martin-Borders added a bucket before the buzzer to make the final.

Rogers scored 21 points to lead the Burney squad and Jones followed with 19.
