ISLAND PARK - For a limited time and with limited funds the USFS Island Park Ranger District is once again offering bear-resistant dump-sters to area businesses and or subdivisions. This year, we are also offering bear-resistant residential refuse and storage cabinets to the residents of Island Park. The cost-share program allows the Forest Service to make bear-resistant dump-sters and cabinets available to the public at a huge savings. Island Park and the surrounding area have a thriving bear population. Both black bear and grizzlies make their home here and pass through our residential areas when traveling to favorite natural food sources. Unfortunately, in recent years our area has had a high incidence of bear conflicts resulting in property damage, injuries to people and deaths of bears. It has been found that unsecured garbage is the biggest reason why bears stay in our neighborhoods. Our goal should be to reduce this attractant to bears through the use of bear resistant items such as approved dumpsters and residential units. Currently, a dumpster size is four cubic yards and is made of 12-gauge galvanized steel. This could be a good alternative for subdivisions in our area especially those having to travel a good distance to the landfill. Bear-resistant dumpsters have special latches that prevent bears from breaking in. The net cost is $660. Residential refuse and storage cabinets are made with a top and front access and can be used to store one or two 32 gallon garbage cans. This is also a good alternative for storing animal feed or other personal belongings. These are also made of galvanized steel and have special latches. The net cost is $150. If you are interested in obtaining a dumpster or cabinet or would just like some more information, please contact the Island Park Ranger Station at 558.7301 and ask for Lynn. These bear-resistant items will be sold on a first come basis and when this limited supply is gone - they're gone.
