Three Eastside Fire & Rescue firefighters are receiving Federal Emergency Management Agency this week. The firefighters -- members of the Eastside Hazardous Materials Response Team -- are attending a weeklong training session about domestic preparedness in Anniston, Ala.

A FEMA grant paid for the transportation, course curriculum and lodging costs associated with the specialized training at the Department of Homeland Security Chemical, Ordnance, Biological & Radiological Training Facility.

Capt. Pete Brummel, Firefighter Rocky Martinez and Firefighter Jason Stotler are attending the only training facility in the nation dedicated solely to first responders for toxic chemicals and five nerve agents.

EFR participates with members from Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Bothell, Woodinville and Duvall fire departments.

EFR has eight firefighters trained to the hazardous materials technician level providing expertise in hazard pre-planning, chemistry, event mitigation, hazard analysis, and decontamination. Technicians are proficient in recognizing chemical, biological, nuclear, radiological and explosive events.
