Woman gets two prison terms in District Court

A woman was sentenced to two separate 5 year prison terms on two separate charges during a session of 28th Judicial District Court, held in and for the Parish of LaSalle, on August 21, 2009.

The Honorable J. Christopher Peters, District Judge, presided at the Court session.

Also at their regular duties were District Attorney J. Reed Walters and assistants, Deputy Sheriffs Jim Arbogast and Christy Greer, Deputy Clerk of Court Cynthia A. Bradford, and Court Reporter and Administrator Bobby L. Wilson.

Barbara Jean Bucher was sentenced to serve 5 years at hard labor on a charge of simple burglary. Four years were suspended and she was placed on 5 years active supervised probation. Special conditions of probation are that she make restitution and testify against co-defendants. A restitution hearing was set for October 13 and she is to pay restitution within 6 months. On a charge of distribution of legend drug, she was sentenced to serve 5 years at hard labor. Four years were suspended and she was fined $1,000 and cost. Fine and cost are to be paid within one year. She was sentenced as per a plea bargain agreement. The sentences are to run concurrent and cost is consecutive.

Louis Cockerham, Sr. was sentenced to serve 7 years at hard labor on a charge of theft of oil equipment. The 7 years were suspended and he was placed on 5 years active supervised probation. He is to be evaluated by the additive disorder clinic and follow recommendations and be subject to random drug testing. Restitution has already been paid.

Lance Whitehead, Sr. was sentenced to serve 5 years at hard labor on a charge of theft over $500. The 5 years were suspended and he was placed on 2 years active supervised probation and is to make restitution and pay cost. He was given credit for $5,500 in restitution and was not sentenced as a habitual offender this time.

Logan C. Whatley was fined $500 and cost and given 10 days in jail for DWI. He is to attend driver education and substance abuse programs.

Charles Turner was sentenced to serve 5 years at hard labor on a charge of possession of cocaine. Four years were suspended and he was placed on 5 years active supervised probation. He is to pay a fine of $2,000 and cost within one year of his release.
