Cold weather has slowed the demolition of the old United Farmers Cooperative fertilizer plant in Lafayette. Lafayette Excavating started the work before Christmas, with about a third of the building still standing.

According to Butch Altmann, the building is being removed so a cold warehouse for tires can be put up on its concrete slab. Because of its former use as a fertilizer building, it can't be re-used--remnants of the fertilizer remain in the wood and would cause metal items, such as tire rims, stored in it to rust

The 800-ton fertilizer and blending plant was put up in 1964 on a tract of land purchased from the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. A complete ammonia conversion plant was added the next year.

With the construction of UFC's new fertilizer plant in Winthrop, the Lafayette facility was last used in 2008.
