COLLEGE STATION - Texas AgriLife Extension Service Agent David Winkler for agriculture and natural resources in Bosque County was honored with a Superior Service Award at the annual Texas A&M AgriLife conference held in January in College Station.

The award cited Winkler's focus on| wildlife and range management, but also noted his dedication to beef and forage production, as well as 4-H youth development.

Though a rural area, from 60 percent to 70 percent of farm and ranch acreage in Bosque County is currently owned by people who live out-of-county, usually in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area, according to the award documentation. Winkler has had the responsibility to help traditional, full-tithe ranchers and farmers as well as the absentee landowners, who often have different priorities than production agriculture.

The diverse clientele has required Winkler to run the gamut of AgriLife Extension educational programming, including predator awareness, wildlife management, chemical weed and brush control, and feral hog control. He also leads or serves on the Bosque County Hay Show, AgriLife Extension Livestock and Crops Committee, Central Texas Beef Cattle Meeting, 4-H Program Development Committee, 4-H Council, 4-H Ag Project Task Force, and 4-H Youth Board.

"I have served with David on the 4-H Budget and Finance Task Force and the 4-H Leadership Council for the last 15 years," wrote Barbara Domel, Meridian Livestock Commission Company, in her commendation letter. "He has worked each year to improve the programs offered by his office and continues to have endless enthusiasm for young people and the role of 4-H in their lives."

"David is really good at finding the talents of people in the community and gaining their support to help others of all ages within the county," Jay Wright, general manager of the W4 Ranch in Morgan, wrote in his support letter. "He has been diligent about helping the county have educational programs that kept the county informed and gave continuing education courses to those who needed them."
