LeRoy Birkland

Funeral services for LeRoy Birkland. age 78, of Bottineau, North Dakota, were held on Friday. August 28, 2009, at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau. Burial was at the Little Prairie Cemetery near Dunseith. LeRoy passed away on Thursday. August 20, 2009, at a Bottineau nursing home.

Officiating at the service was the Reverend David Hayes. Debbi Sapp was the soloist and Shirley Vandal was the organist.

Casket bearers were Larry Birkland, Brian Birkland, Mike DuBois, Wade DuBois, Chris DuBois and Brandon DuBois.

LeRoy Henry Birkland, a son of Henry and Josephine (Hack-man) Birkland, was bom on March 7, 1931, at Dunseith, North Dakota, where he was reared. At a young age, he began working for area farmers. In 1951, he entered the US Marine Corps and served until his honorable discharge in 1953. He moved to Seattle and worked as a mechanic for Boeing. He later worked as a mechanic at a car dealership. He was married to Delores Hiatt. She passed away in 1982. LeRoy later worked for the City of Renton, Washington, as a mechanic. On December 12, 1995, he married Alice Jayne at Seattle. In 2004, they moved to Bottineau where they have resided since.

LeRoy was very musical. He enjoyed playing fiddle and guitar at the Aqua Barn in Renton. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Alice of Bottineau: five stepsons, Terry Hiatt. Randy Hiatt, Dan Jayne, Terry Jayne and Tim Jayne, all of Seattle; two brothers, Norman (Ena) Birkland of Seattle, and James (Ruby) Birkland, Dunseith; sister, Emily Boucher of La Grande, Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Delores; and sisters, Janice Birkland, Irene Haitt. Amelia Birkland and Eleanor DuBois.

Arrangements were with Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.
