In the Fifth Judicial District Court Tuesday, Jacob Bassett, 27, of Lovell was sentenced to two to four years in prison for violating probation conditions including using alcohol and drugs and not complying with reporting and employment requirements. Bassett's probation stems from a burglary charge in 2004. Bassett received a split sentence, which means he avoids going to the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution in Torrington but must serve 90 days in the Big Horn County Jail.

District Court Judge Robert Skar said Bassett has served 61 days of the 90-day sentence and will be eligible for release in 29 days. He will no longer be on probation but must still pay $1,400 in restitution owed. If Bassett does not make $100 monthly payments beginning 30 days from his release he will be brought back before the court through an indirect criminal contempt of court order, according to Skar.

Big Horn County and Prosecuting Attorney Georgia Antley Hunt said she agreed to the split sentence in this case because Bassett has already served hundreds of days in jail. After calculating good time using the Wyoming Department of Corrections formula, he would have been eligible for release from prison almost immediately.
