Laura Ruth Benson Olsen died peacefully in her home on Aug. 27, 2009, in Lovell. Ruth was born Jan. 22, 1935, to Leonard Albert and Laura Mortenson Benson in Cowley.
She was preceded in death by husband Wilber Olsen; great-granddaughter Bobbi Lynn Olsen; her parents and most of her siblings, Jean Gelok, Albert Benson, Dell Benson, Verna Walker, James Benson and Stanley Benson.
Her only surviving sister is Alma Jolley. Her surviving children are Nanette (Greg) Prindle with six children and four grandchildren, Connie Norma (Rex) Allen, Jon Olsen with four children and eight grandchildren, Randall (Violet) Olsen with five children and three grandchildren.
Ruth enjoyed sewing, embroidering, knitting, crocheting, paint crafts, making posters for New Horizons Care Center, housework, yard work and going on outings with her family.
When she was 39 years old she was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis on the day she became grandma for the first time. This made it hard to hold or do things for her grandchildren but she has enjoyed watching them grow up and seeing their accomplishments. They seemed to enjoy coming to grandma's house. She had many joints replaced which have helped her be up and about.
Sunday was her favorite day of the week because she could attend her church meetings. She attended relief society since she was a young bride. When she was 19 she was in the West Ward primary presidency. Since then she has been a visiting teacher, taught primary, young woman's, and Sunday school and served as the ward librarian. She also was a magazine representative, substitute relief society secretary, visiting teaching supervisor and has given many talks in church.
Ruth has loved and touched everyone that has been a part of her life. Though her body has left us her spirit will stay with us forever, in our hearts and memories.
A family viewing will be held Saturday, Sept. 5, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the West Chapel of the LDS church in Lovell. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. in the East Chapel. Haskell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
