Expected sugarbeet production up

An updated forecast based on Sept. 1 estimates indicates Wyoming sugarbeet production will be much higher than last year, according to Kim

Faircloth with the Wyoming Field Office of National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The sugarbeet production forecast is 21 percent above last year. According to the Crop Weather report for Wyoming ending Sept. 4, the sugarbeet condition was rated 91 percent good or better.

Wyoming sugarbeet producers intended to harvest 30, 300 acres, up 4, 700 acres from last year. The average yield is expected to be 27.0 tons per acre, down 1.5 tons from the Aug. 1 forecast 0.5 tons more than the 2009 yield. Total production is expected to be 818, 000 tons,

21 percent above 2009.

Other Aug. 1 forecasts include:

Barley productionis expected to total 5.16 million bushels, down 23 percent from last year's production and down 25 percent from 2008.

Dry bean production in 2010 is forecast at 1, 034, 000 hundredweight.

The Aug. 1 forecast for alfalfa and alfalfa hay mixtures is 1.61 million tons, down 7 percent from last year's crop but up 5 percent from the 2008 harvest. Yields are expected to average 2.4 tons per acre, down from 2.5 tons per acre last year.

Production of all other hay, at 784, 000 tons, is down 3 percent from last year but up 12 percent from 2008. Acreage expected to be harvested is estimated at 560, 000, down 20, 000 acres from 2009. Forecasted yield, at 1.4 tons per acre, is equal to that harvested in 2009 and 2008.

Nationally, production of sugarbeets for the 2010 crop year is forecast at 33.1 million tons, up 2 percent from the Aug. 1 forecast and 12 percent above 2009. Producers expect to harvest 1.14 million acres, down 2, 500 acres from the Aug.l forecast and down 5, 100 acres from 2009.

Expected yield is forecast at 28.9 tons per acre, an increase of 0.6 ton from the previous forecast and 3.2 tons from last year.

If realized, this will be a record high yield for the United States. Record high yields are expected in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming.
