Gladys Kooiker, 73, of Rock Rapids died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehab Center.

Services were Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Faith Baptist Church, Rock Rapids, with interment in Riverview Cemetery.

Gladys Wiekamp was born Feb. 13, 1937, near Matlock, the daughter of Bill and Allie (Van Bruggen) Wiekamp. She attended Matlock School and Sheldon High School and received an RN degree from Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing, Sioux City, in August 1958.

On Aug. 13, 1958, she married Leroy Kooiker. They farmed south of Rock Rapids 52 years. She was employed as a nurse at Merrill Pioneer Community

Hospital and Lyon Manor Nursing Home. The family cared for two long-term foster children, two foreign exchange students and several short-term foster children.

At Faith Baptist Church, she was a Sunday school teacher, AW ANA Clubs commander and leader, choir director, pianist and Ladies' Circle member and leader. She sang with the gospel group, Musical Messengers.

Survivors include her husband; four sons, Gary of Bandon, S.D., Scott of Ellsworth, Minn., and Keith and Reid, both of Rock Rapids; two daughters, Mrs. William (Sherry) Frey of Covington, Ky., and Mrs. John (Beth) Steven of Rock Rapids; two foster daughters, Mrs. David (Jessica) Nieman of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Jeri Simmons of Oklahoma; 16 grandchildren; one brother, James of Rochester, Minn., and two sisters, Ellen Geels and Arlene Kramer, both of Sheldon.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
