Mildred Schipper, 95, of Cockeysville, Md., died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009.

Internment will be at a later date.

Mildred Johnson was born Sept. 8, 1913, near Inwood, the daughter of John and Malla Johnson. After completing high school in Inwood, she attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, and earned a diploma in rural teaching in 1931. She taught near Inwood several years. She then earned a bachelor of arts degree from State University of Iowa at Iowa City in 1937 On Aug. 18, 1937, she married Arthur Schipper in Iowa City. They lived in Bryan and College Station, Texas, Tallahassee, Fla., and South Bend, Ind. In 1954, she began teaching art at John Adams High School in South Bend and earned a master of fine arts from Notre Dame, the first lay woman to earn that degree at Notre Dame. In 1957 the family moved to Oak Ridge, Tenn., and then to Bethesda, Md., where she taught high school art. In 1972, the couple moved to near Delta, Pa.

Her husband died in 1974. In 1996 she moved to Cockeysville.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur "Jr. of Benicia, Calif, and Ross of Washington, D.C.; one daughter, Mala Burt of St. Michaels, Md.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one brother, Robert of Inwood.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one daughter, Rosemary.
