Martin Schettler, 88, of Sherman, S.D., died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at Dougherty House Hospice in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Mass was Monday, Aug. 31, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Garretson, S.D.

Mr. Schettler was born Nov. 15, 1920, at Larchwood, the son of Frank and Mary (Schreurs) Schettler.

On Sept. 3, 1946, he married Theresa Scholten. He farmed in the Larchwood area until 1950 when they moved to and began farming in the Sherman area.

His wife died April 22, 1998.

At St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church he was a board member, usher and a Catholic Order of Foresters member.

Survivors include one son, Keith of Whitewood, S.D.; three daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Barbara) Schneider of Brandon, S.D., Mrs. Jamie (Beverly) Johnson of Sioux Falls and Mrs. Larry (Karen) Peters of Wagner, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, Alvin of Larchwood, and three sisters, Emma Lucas of Larchwood, Clara George of Rock Rapids and Bert Kramer of Inwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leo and Francis, and four sisters, Darlene Schettler, Loretta Roeman, Amelda Anderson and Margaret DeSmet.
