Monroe County has a new assessor. Judy Harmon, who narrowly defeated incumbent Eleanor Roberts by a margin of less than one percent in the November 2008 election, received her oath of office on Tuesday, Sept. 1, from Monroe County Clerk Sandra Francis. Harmon out dueled Roberts by a vote of 2108-2170 in the November election. Because the result was less than one percent a recount was necessary and after all ballots were counted Harmon was declared the winner.

While other election winners took office in January the assessor's office works on a fiscal year schedule and Harmon had to wait until Sept. 1 to assume her elected duties and begin her four-year term.

Harmon was born, raised and lives in Madison.

"My husband (Bill) and I have lived in the same house for 29 years and it is right across the street from the house I grew up in," said Harmon.

Harmon brings a wealth of fiscal knowledge and an enthusiastic attitude to her new position. She has worked in the banking field for over 15 years, starting as a teller and working at the Madison Bank in a number of different capacities.

"I started in the banking field right out of high school at the Farmers and Merchants Bank, in Moberly, as a teller," said Harmon.

Harmon has also worked as a credit investigator and worked collections. Her most recent position was working for Enviro-Group selling industrial recycling equipment.

"I think I can relate to the people of Monroe County," said Harmon about what strengths she brings to her new position. "I have always lived here."

"I enjoy working with others and have worked with other people all my life," added Harmon.

"I am glad to be the Monroe County Assessor because I want to serve the fine people of Monroe County," noted Harmon. "I am looking forward to meeting all the people of the county."

Harmon and her husband have been married 43 years and have two children, Andrew, who lives in Holliday, and Carla (husband Jim) Page, who resides in Overland Park, Kan. They have two grandchildren Carter and Mallory.

"Besides living our whole lives in Madison I think we have lived outside Monroe County for maybe 90 days total," said Harmon.

Harmon enjoys singing and sings with the musical group, "Spiritual Sounds."

The oldest of five children, Harmon and husband love to travel and enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and her family.
