Locally Grown Fruit and Vegetables

Last year we ran several articles in the local newspaper to try and get locally grown fruit and vegetables for the Veggies for Seniors program. This year we struck GOLD!

About two months ago, we did a home visit at Jim McHughes's home regarding an oil that he had put on his fruit trees. After a lot of discussion, I asked him if he would be willing to support our Veggies for Seniors program with his fruit and vegetables. Since then we have been seen locally grown plums, nectarines, peaches, cucumbers, green beans, and grapes -- all from Jim's garden.

We pay Jim a very small fee that assists him with paying his water bill and our Veggies for Seniors program has benefited from large amounts of produce. Last year, we went to Lattin Farms once a week for fresh produce. This year we have had donations, McHughes Gardens, and our garden demonstration project supplying the produce right here in Hawthorne. We definitely have seen some impact and even had to add more seniors to our program. We hope to have even more locally grown produce available next year.

I think that it is a good lesson for all of us that Hawthorne has the ability to grow its own food. We hope to continue this trend in the next few years and continue local food production. In fact, we are working on gardening budgets to assist local residents right now. If you have extra squash or you can supply large amounts of produce, please contact me (Staci) or Patty Click at the Cooperative Extension office at 945-3444. We are definitely interested in working with you.
