On Friday night, September 3, our Serpent football team squared off to play the Carlin High Railroaders in the first region football game of this season. Electricity was in the air as the two teams warmed-up and the fans filed into our stadium. The season opener drew a large crowd of Hawthorne fans and all were anticipating a great game between two strong high school football teams. There was only one problem on Friday night; the NIAA referees did not arrive to officiate the game. There was a communication glitch between the NIAA and MCHS. Upon Carlin High School's request, we cancelled the J.V. game and the NIAA arbiter thought that both of the games were cancelled, including the varsity game. It wasn't anybody's fault. These things happen on occasion. Our biggest dilemma was deciding how to deal with the problem in a fair and equitable fashion for both schools. The game had to be played and it was imperative that we have impartial referees to officiate. This is when our community came to assist.

It was decided that we could not have officials until the next day, Saturday, at noon. The Carlin team had not planned on spending the night and did not arrange for motel accommodations. The El Capitan was contacted and, although very busy on Friday night, found enough rooms to accommodate their players, coaches, cheerleaders, and the bus driver. As the host school we felt that it was important for us to fund this expense in behalf of our visiting team. The El Capitan gave us a fabulous rate on numerous rooms and the Kenny Bostic Memorial Youth Athletic Fund (KBMYAF) paid the $413 motel fee. Our booster club ladies prepared food for their entire Carlin team and coaches at no expense to them. This is the spirit of community support that we greatly appreciate at the high school and throughout our school district. We at MCHS are grateful for our community supporters. Thank you all! Also, our Serpent football team beat Carlin High in a thrilling 52-50 overtime victory on Saturday afternoon. Well done team and coaches!, Walt P. Hackford Principal, Mineral County High School
