Luverne R. (Vernie) Cammarata, a long time resident of Hawthorne, Nevada passed away on Friday, September 11, 2009 after a brief illness. Vernie was born in Hoven, South Dakota on March 6, 1925, the daughter of John and Anne Bornhofer. She was the youngest of the four sisters.

Vernie grew up in Hoven and moved around with her sister, Angie Lunsford, and while in Hawthorne met Phil Cammarata. Phil was in the U.S. Navy. She and Phil were married on October 5, 1946 in Santa Rosa, California. They moved to Hawthorne in 1959 where they lived for 50 years.

Vernie and Phil had four children. Needless to say, Vernie was a busy woman. First and foremost, she loved her family. Vernie's priorities were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was Catholic, loved her church and attended it regularly. She also loved the slot machines, dancing and baseball. Her father was in the Minor League for the Milwaukee Brewers. That is how she came to love the game. Since dancing was also one of her favorite activities, you would see Vernie out with her sons, dancing the night away. Vernie had many friends and acquaintances.

Vernie loved to cook for her family. Every Wednesday was spaghetti night at her house and she had done this for decades. She would feed her entire family her famous "secret" spaghetti; spending the evening with those she loved most, enjoying their company and the great conversation.

Vernie was preceded in death by her husband, Phil Cammarata of Hawthorne, Nevada and infant son, Philip John Cammarata, grandson Philip Lee Cammarata, Jr. and her three sisters: Margaret Curio, Angie Lunsford and Anna Marie Donaldson. She is survived by her daughter, MaryAnn and Kenneth Ramsey and her sons, Philip Lee and Gail Cammarata and Michael and Rhona Cammarata, along with six grandchildren: Stephanie (Mike) Isom, Mark (Tammy) Ramsey, Ciera (Luke) O'Brien, Dani (David) Porter, Pattie (Kevin) Holt and Lydia Cammarata along with two great grandchildren: Teigen Porter and Ramsey Kate Isom.

A Rosary of Christian Hope will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 18 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Saturday, September 19 at 10:30 a.m. A reception will be held in the Catholic Hall after the services for family & friends.

Arrangements are under the direction of Gunter's Funeral Home - Hawthorne, Nevada.
