Family and friends gathered at the Second Baptist Church for* the morning worship service recently to honor Rev. Preston Batts and his 55 years of service as a Baptist preacher.

In 1955, the first sermon he preached was entitled "Jesus Is the Light of The World." In remembrance of that occasion, Rev. Batts preached the same sermon title at Second Baptist Church on Sept. 5. Rev. Batts. stated, "the sermon today is the same title, but, hopefully, I've come a long way and have more knowledge now than back then."

He began his preaching ministry in September 1955 in Alabama and moved to Macon in 1956 to attend Mercer University. Beginning as a student and continuing after graduation from Mercer, he pastored nine cburches in the middle Georgia area. Locally, he was the pastor of Dames Ferry Baptist and Juliette Baptist.

He has always been a bi-voca-tional Baptist preacher working as an electrical contractor and preaching the Gospel. He has owned and operated Batts Electrical Construction Company, Central Electric Company, and Presco, Inc.

He is married to Sandra Scott Batts, who has been the pianist for several churches in middle Georgia area.
