The Texas Bankers Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Texas Bankers Association, presented a Cornerstone Award to First State Bank Athens for its "75th Anniversary Community Gifts" project.

The bank celebrated its 75th Anniversary by giving back to the community by giving to organizations that make a difference in the community.

Each full-time bank employee selected a nonprofit organization to receive a donation of $250. The goal was to allow the bank's employees the opportunity to help those organizations that they are currently involved with, as well as to discover new areas where they could make a difference.

Donations of S250 each were made to an Early Childhood Education Center, the Teenage Baseball Association, the Bradford Volunteer Fire Department, an Animal Sanctuary, school organizations and several local church programs. Organizations receiving multiple donations included local food pantries and Meals-on-Wheels; the Make-a-Wish Foundation: the Henderson County Humane Society; the Rainbow Room, which is an emergency resource center for abused and neglected children; the Family Peace Project that helps those in domestic abuse situations; the Disciples Clinic, a faith-based community health clinic, and the Veterans Memorial Gardens.

The Cornerstone Award was accepted last week by bank President and CEO Jess Laird at the Texas Bankers Association's 127th Annual Convention held in Austin.

This is the ninth year the Texas Bankers Foundation has recognized Texas banks for their outstanding community involvement through the Cornerstone Award competition.
