TVCC News-Journal staffers win awards at state competition

Three Trinity Valley Community College News-Journal staffers claimed awards at the 2011 Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Convention held recently in Fort Worth.
Thomas Mercer was the top award winner for TVCC in General Column Writing. His column "Getting shot at while on duty" was awarded first place.
A feature story by Erin Glass claimed second place and Chris York received honorable mention for sports writing.
"Our student media is still a work in progress." said Deidre Jones, the Media Instructor/New-Journal Adviser. "The students had the opportunity to meet other students from schools across Texas. They now have a newfound respect for the field.
"The students came up with strategies to revamp all aspects of the student media. I guess you could say the convention brought out their competitive spirit."
