Habitat project gets MHS biology students into the field

On Wednesday, May 11, the biology students of DeArtis Nickerson Jr. had their annual Habitat Super Bowl out on the Malakoff High School Cross-country Trail.

"It was a great outing and I am still gleaming with joy," said Nickerson. "The students put on a spectacular show."

Each class had to pick out a site in the fall out on the cross-country trail. After finding the site, each class had to clear out its site by rak-ing, shoveling, and sawing to clear away all the debris. A habitat consisting of food, water, and shelter was required. Each class had to do all three and whatever else the students could come up with. The more habitable, the better the habitat.

"In our three years of building habitats, they are getting better," said Niekerson.

The habitats were judged by faculty members and two former biology students. The judges all agreed that this year's habitats were tough to judge.

On Habitat Day, the elementary and middle school students were invited.

"They really enjoyed being out in nature and seeing what the ninth grade biology students had done," Niekerson said. "Everyone is welcome to come out and visit the habitats this week."

This year's winners were:
