The Henderson County Retired School Personnel Association (HCRSPA), for its 13th year, awarded five scholarships to high school seniors in Henderson County. These seniors will be pursuing a degree or certification in the field of teaching.

Three of the five scholarships are funded through a grant provided by The Cain Foundation for Future Teachers, and are awarded specifically to graduates of Athens High School. This is the third year in which HCRSPA is privileged to represent the prestigious foundation. The scholarship recipients are Amalie Arambula from Eustace High School, Erin Samples from Malakoff High School, and Kelsey Hirsch, Sydnee Mikkelsen, and Arelly Tovias, all from Athens High School.

Erin Samples is the daughter of Donna and Timothy Samples. Upon graduation from Malakoff High School, she will first attend Richland College and finish her schooling at Texas A&M where she plans to receive her degree and certification to teach history at the high school level. On her high school campus, Erin participated in the Dual Credit and Distance Learning Programs, UIL competitions in persuasive speaking and current events, and in numerous activities with the National Honor Society and Student Council, and was active in the athletic program, participating and excelling in volleyball, cross country, track, golf, basketball, and softball. Erin was involved in the READY SET TEACH program, which allowed her to work with an elementary teacher each week, gaining valuable experience in tutoring and mentoring students. Within her community, Erin was active in her church youth group, participated in numerous community service projects for church members, joined her group on several mission trips, and participated in clothes drives and city-wide cleanup projects.

The Henderson County Retired School Personnel Association is proud to be able to sponsor aspiring teachers. Applications for scholarships are sent to the senior counselor at all seven Henderson County high schools each January. Applications are available to any high school senior who will pursue a program in which he/she will receive teacher certification: a major in education, or a degree in a subject area with teacher certification. Recipients are selected based upon four areas: high school preparation, participation in school and community activities, character and the desire to be involved in the field of education as evidenced by the direction in which they have focused their lives, and in an essay on the importance of teachers. Information regarding these scholarships may be obtained from Scholarship Chairperson, Jan Bennett, at 903-675-2550.
