The Malakoff High School varsity boys cross country team placed first this past weekend on a soggy, rainy day at the annual Malakoff Cross Country Meet.

The team of Jakeb Thomberry, Ethan Owens, Matt Hernandez, Terry Shamlin, Dylon Neal and Bill Cook edged out Fairfield 65-63 in an exciting race that went down to the wire.

"I am so very proud of my boys," said coach DeArtis Nickerson. "We were short handed the week before at Lake Halbert Park in Corsicana, but this week we were full strength and the Tigers didn't disappoint through rainy conditions. They really wanted to win the Malakoff meet in front of our fans."

The Tigers were led individually by Hernandez, who placed 8th. Thornberry came in 9th, Owens 12th and Shamlin 15th.

In the JV girls division, sophomore Molly LaRue fought through the conditions to shine, placing 2nd.

In her first meet of the year, freshman Kaitlyn Samples placed 12th and ran a great race, according to Nickerson.

In the Middle School boys division, the junior Tigers placed third. The team consisted of Forrest Summerhill, Kendrick Hornbuckle, Zac Jarrett, Emanuel Gonzales, Allen Boyd, Aaron Boyd, and Hayden Levitt. The MMS Tigers were led individually by Summerhill, who finished 9th.

In the Middle School girls division Madi Allen received her second medal of the young season by placing 8th individually and Noa Taylor, in her first race of the year, finished 14th. The MMS Lady Tigers included Allen, Taylor, Sierra Perez and Raylee Stearman.

The high school and middle school cross country teams will be in action this Saturday in Palestine at 8:30 a.m.

Nickerson said he wanted to thank all the coaches, teachers, administration, and booster club "for all the hard work through rainy conditions to make the meet a huge success."

"A special thanks to Berry Lumber for all the support," Nickerson said.

Twenty teams participated at the meet.
